Heartland Humane Society Foundation
When Lyle Carter died at age 83 on August 31, 2008, he left behind a carefully planned and generous gift to Heartland Humane Society. Heartland’s board of directors felt strongly that the wisest use for a major portion of the gift would be to invest in the organization’s future. They decided to transfer $100,000 of the gift to BCF to establish the the Heartland Humane Society Endowment Fund. Heartland Humane Society is a nonprofit animal welfare organization that each year receives more than 2,400 animals. In addition to sheltering homeless animals and conducting humane education programs, the organization provides lost and found services and distributes pet food to low-income pet owners.
Lyle Carter graduated from Philomath High School, served his country in World War II as a Green Beret, and attended college in Forest Grove. He taught youth in Lowell and Alsea, and retired after many years of teaching at Philomath High School. Earnings from Lyle’s gift will support in perpetuity the general care of animals at Heartland Humane Society, including spay and neuter services, vaccinations, surgery, foster care programs, and return to-owner services. The community and Heartland Humane Society’s animals will benefit from Lyle’s gift in perpetuity.
