Heartland Humane Shelter & Care is a local non-profit animal welfare organization working to make Benton County a safe and healthy place for every pet, and for the people who love them.
Founded in 1966, our mission is to build a more compassionate community by teaching humane messages to our youth, caring for homeless animals, and strengthening the human-animal bond.
Our doors are always open
to pets in need.
Our location-based animal shelter serves the pets and families of Benton County and Corvallis with animal wellbeing programs and humane education. We will never turn away a pet in need from our service area because of poor health, age, breed, or temperament.

Services offered at our animal shelter include:
- Low-cost adoptions
- Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services
- A Working Cat Program for feral and semi-feral cats
- Spay/neuter services for local rescue groups
We work with local and national partners to save more lives through transfer programs. Transfer programs bring animals from high population areas to lower ones (like Benton County), and utilize shelters’ unique strengths to give pets the best chance of adoption.
We offer low-income services to help families care for, and keep their pets.
- Lost-and-found pet services for Benton County and Corvallis
- Pet Food Pantry
- Low-cost spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccine clinics
- Inclement weather housing for pets of the homeless
- A Safe Housing Program for the pets of people in crisis
Creating a Better Future: Serving People and Pets
Our Humane Education program offers tours and visits community groups to give presentations that sow the seeds of compassion, teaching responsible pet ownership, behavior, training, and more.
Our Volunteer Program enhances the lives of our animals while providing job skills training to youth and adults with disabilities or other barriers to traditional employment paths.
The right nutrition can transform how a pet feels, looks, and acts. That’s why Heartland is proud to partner with Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love Program to provide consistent, science led nutrition to the animals in our care.
With every adoption, Heartland sends home complimentary starter food bags to make sure each adopted pet has a smoother transition into their new home.

To carry out our humane commitment to the animals of Benton County by operating an open-door shelter and caring for homeless animals; providing education and enrichment programs to promote healthy human-animal bonds; offering access to low-cost services to those in need, with an emphasis on population control; developing progressive outreach programs; setting a high standard of animal care and husbandry; supporting opportunities for clinical education; and enhancing our funding resources to continue expanding these efforts.
