Humane Education
Our mission begins with our commitment to education.
Through our Humane Education program, we strive to instill compassion in our community’s youth. Each year we visit with local schools and youth organizations, teaching responsible pet ownership and animal safety. Youth groups are invited into the shelter for a “behind the scenes” look at how we care for our community’s animals. We promote volunteerism by hosting outside youth volunteer groups and running an after-school youth program at the shelter. Each spring and summer break we run a youth day camp, where participants learn fun animal related topics. With these partnerships within the community, Heartland is able to reach over 3,000 youth ages 3 to 18 years.
